I Thought We Were Being Spied On. The Airbnb Host’s Reply Was Much Worse

It started with a subtle, rhythmic blinking light coming from our Airbnb’s smoke detector. My wife noticed it first, pointing upward with a growing sense of unease. I pulled up a chair, climbed up, and unscrewed the plastic casing. My blood ran cold. Tucked neatly inside the fixture was a tiny glass lens—a hidden camera. My stomach sank into a heavy knot. Without saying a word, we crammed our belongings into our bags and bolted to the car, our hearts pounding the entire time.

We didn’t stop driving until we reached a diner two towns over. Still shaking, I pulled out my laptop to post a scathing review and warn future guests about the hidden lens. Minutes later, a notification buzzed on my phone—the host had replied:

“You fool, that wasn’t a camera. That was the transmitter for our private security system. Now that you’ve broken it, they’re going to come looking for it.”

A cold chill raced down my spine. Who were “they”? Panicked, I opened my phone gallery to re-examine the proof photos I’d taken before running out. That’s when I noticed a detail I had missed earlier. In one picture, just behind the living room curtain in the background, a faint red laser dot was glowing steadily against the wall.
