While images like this often circulate online with dramatic claims, a photograph alone cannot confirm exactly what is being removed or what caused it. In some genuine medical cases, however, larvae can infest wounds or body cavities. This condition is known as myiasis.

What Is Nasal Myiasis?

Myiasis occurs when fly larvae infest living tissue or body cavities. When larvae involve the nose, the condition is sometimes referred to as nasal myiasis.

It is uncommon in many settings but can occur when flies have access to damaged tissue, open wounds, or certain nasal conditions. Poor wound care and environmental exposure can increase the risk in susceptible situations.

The structures seen in a dramatic image should not automatically be assumed to be larvae, however. Confirmation requires proper medical examination.

How Could Larvae Enter the Nose?

Depending on the type of infestation, flies may deposit eggs or larvae near an exposed wound or body opening. Under favorable conditions, the larvae can develop and feed on available tissue or biological material.

Risk may be increased by factors such as:

• Open or poorly healing wounds
• Prolonged exposure to flies
• Poor wound hygiene
• Certain chronic medical conditions
• Reduced ability to maintain personal care
• Living or spending time in environments where flies are abundant
