It Looks Like a Simple Sting—But the Reaction Can Be Much More Serious
A wasp buzzing around a garden or outdoor gathering may seem like nothing more than an annoying nuisance. But a single sting can cause a surprisingly intense reaction, particularly when the affected area becomes swollen, painful, or increasingly irritated.
The photograph above shows a dramatic clinical scene in which a wasp is attached to the skin while medical instruments are being used to manage the area. The surrounding skin appears raised and irritated.
Although the image is striking, it is important not to assume the exact circumstances or diagnosis from a photograph alone. Different insects can cause different reactions, and the appropriate treatment depends on what actually happened.
What this image does highlight, however, is an important lesson:
An insect sting should never be ignored when the reaction appears unusually severe.
