The Police Finally Revealed Who the Woman I Babysat For Really Was

The officer finished the sentence carefully: “This woman was reported missing years before you ever met her.” I thought they had confused her with someone else, but the photograph was unmistakable. Same face, same small scar near her eyebrow, same woman who had trusted me with her twins every night for two years. According to the police, she had disappeared from another state under a different name after leaving an abusive relationship. Her family believed something terrible had happened because she had never contacted them again.

That explained the midnight trips. She hadn’t been partying or meeting someone secretly like I’d occasionally wondered. She had been working overnight cleaning offices, taking cash jobs whenever possible because she was terrified that normal employment records would reveal where she lived. The twins’ father had been searching for her, and she believed disappearing completely was the only way to keep her children safe.

The police weren’t there to accuse me of anything. They hoped I might know where she had gone next. I didn’t. All I had was a goodbye card she gave me before leaving. Until that moment, I had never looked closely at the address written beneath her signature.

I handed it to the officer.

Several weeks later, I received a letter.

She and the twins were safe.

She thanked me for giving her children two peaceful years when almost nothing else in their lives had felt safe.
