What My Side Mirror Caught at 3 AM on a Deserted Highway

Driving a semi-truck across the country late at night comes with its fair share of quiet roads and endless pavement. But during a recent haul through a lonely stretch of Highway 10, something happened that completely changed how I look into my side mirrors.

It was around 3:15 AM, and the fog was setting in thick over the asphalt. The highway was completely empty—no headlights behind me, no trucks ahead.

A Sudden Glitch in the Rear View

As I was cruising at 65 mph, my dashboard lights flickered for a split second. Thinking it was just a loose wire, I adjusted my position and glanced at my driver-side mirror to check the trailer clearance.

That is when I noticed something strange.

Behind the left rear wheels of my trailer, where there should have been nothing but dark empty pavement, a shadow was moving. At first, I assumed it was a piece of shredded tire or a windblown tumbleweed caught in the exhaust stream. But it wasn’t moving like debris. It was maintaining the exact same distance behind my truck—moving at 65 miles per hour.

The Unexplained Encounter

I tapped my brakes lightly to see if the distance would close. The shadow slowed down instantly, matching my exact speed. My heart started racing as I turned on the high beams on my rear exterior cabin lights.

When the white LED lights flashed against the fog, the silhouette vanished into the treeline along the shoulder within a fraction of a second—far faster than any animal or human could sprint.

I kept my foot heavy on the gas and didn’t slow down until I reached a bright, populated truck stop two hours away.

Stay Safe Out There

When I checked my exterior camera footage at the gas station, the file for that exact 5-minute window was corrupted. Whether it was an optical illusion caused by night fatigue and thick fog, or something unexplained along that remote highway, one thing is certain: night driving always requires double the caution.
