Severe Facial Breakout: Why Deep Skin Lesions Should Never Be Squeezed at Home

A dramatic facial lesion can look like an ordinary pimple at first, but large, painful, swollen areas with multiple openings or deep bumps may require professional evaluation. The image appears to show an inflamed area around the nose and upper lip with several prominent openings and raised lesions.
A photograph alone cannot confirm whether this is severe acne, an infected cyst, an abscess, or another skin condition. Different conditions can look similar and require different treatment.
What Could Cause a Lesion Like This?
Deep acne can produce nodules and cysts that develop beneath the surface of the skin. These lesions can become painful, swollen, and difficult to treat with ordinary over-the-counter products.
Another possibility is a skin abscess or infected cyst, which can cause a painful, warm swelling and may contain pus. Abscesses sometimes require medical drainage and, depending on the cause, antibiotics.
That is why it is important not to assume that every large facial bump is simply a pimple.
Why Squeezing Can Make Things Worse
When a deep lesion is squeezed, material can be pushed farther into surrounding tissue. Dermatologists warn that picking or squeezing can increase inflammation and the risk of infection, discoloration, pain, and permanent scarring.
This is especially important on the face, where inflammation and scarring can leave long-lasting changes in appearance.
Professional Treatment May Be Necessary
If a lesion is large, painful, infected, or deep beneath the skin, a dermatologist can determine what is actually causing it.
Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may include prescription acne medication, a corticosteroid injection for certain painful acne nodules or cysts, or a medically performed drainage procedure.
For a true skin abscess, a healthcare professional may need to drain the collection safely, sometimes with local anesthesia.
