My Son-in-Law’s Strange Bathroom Habit Left Me Wondering What He Was Hiding
I stopped by my daughter’s house one afternoon to drop off a few things she’d forgotten after a family gathering. She invited me in while she finished a phone call, and I waited in the living room for a few minutes.
Eventually, I asked if I could use the bathroom.
That’s when I noticed something that immediately struck me as odd.
My son-in-law was kneeling beside the shower, carefully stretching a balloon over the drain. At first, I thought he was joking, but he seemed completely serious. As I looked around, I noticed several more unopened balloons sitting neatly on a nearby shelf.
Curious, I asked what he was doing.
Before he could answer, my daughter walked into the hallway.
“It’s none of your business,” she said. “Just leave it.”
Her response only made me more suspicious.
On the drive home, my mind raced through every possibility I could imagine. Was it some kind of plumbing trick? A strange cleaning method? An experiment? I couldn’t think of a single reason someone would regularly keep balloons in a bathroom.
Unable to stop wondering, I mentioned it to a friend, who immediately laughed.
She explained that some people use a balloon or similar flexible cover to temporarily seal a drain while checking for odors, testing airflow, or trying to figure out whether sewer gases or insects are coming up through the plumbing. Others use them during simple plumbing maintenance to help identify pressure or drainage issues before calling a professional.
Suddenly, the mystery didn’t seem nearly as dramatic as I’d imagined.
Looking back, I realized I’d probably let my curiosity get the better of me. While I still wish my daughter had simply explained it instead of shutting down the conversation, I also understand why she felt defensive.
Sometimes the strangest things have perfectly ordinary explanations—and our imaginations can turn a simple household trick into something far more mysterious than it really is.
