Unusual Nasal Skin Lesions: Why Multiple Blackheads and an Inflamed Spot Should Not Be Ignored

At first glance, the nose may simply look like it has severe blackheads. But the close-up image shows something much more unusual: numerous dark plugs across the skin, areas of irritation, and a clinician using a sterile-looking instrument to examine or remove material from one of the openings.

While dramatic skin-treatment images can attract attention online, the appearance of a lesion alone cannot confirm exactly what is happening. Several different skin conditions can produce enlarged pores, dark plugs, cystic material, or inflamed openings.

What Could Cause Numerous Dark Plugs on the Nose?

The nose naturally contains many sebaceous glands and pores. These pores can become filled with sebum and dead skin cells, producing comedones that may appear dark at the surface.

However, when there are unusually large or numerous openings, significant inflammation, bleeding, swelling, or unusual material coming from the skin, other conditions may need to be considered.

Possible causes can include:

• Open comedones and severely clogged pores
• Enlarged or irritated sebaceous glands
