A Close Look at Severe Skin Lesions: What Could Cause Multiple Inflamed Openings on the Chin?

A close look at severe, inflamed skin lesions on the chin, what may cause multiple openings and clogged pores, warning signs of infection, and when professional medical care is needed.

When a Small Skin Problem Becomes Something Much More Serious

Most people are familiar with occasional pimples, blackheads, or clogged pores. But sometimes, the skin can develop a much more dramatic reaction—especially when several inflamed lesions appear close together.

The image above shows a close-up of the lower face with an area of significant redness, swelling, and multiple enlarged openings in the skin. Several of the openings contain dark material, while the surrounding skin appears irritated and inflamed.

Although images like this can look alarming, it is important to remember that a photograph alone cannot establish a medical diagnosis. Similar-looking lesions can have very different causes, ranging from severely blocked follicles to inflammatory skin disorders or infection.

What Makes This Appearance Unusual?

Healthy skin contains thousands of hair follicles and pores. These openings can become blocked by a mixture of:

  • Oil (sebum)
  • Dead skin cells
  • Keratin
  • Bacteria
  • Sweat and debris

When a follicle becomes heavily blocked, it may appear darker because the material inside reacts with air. If inflammation develops around the follicle, the area can become red, swollen, tender, and sometimes painful.

In more severe cases, several neighboring follicles can become inflamed at the same time.
